XL Featured Tribesmen Of The Week Tyree’ Whitson
1. What are your biggest fashion obstacles?
I think my biggest fashion obstacles align with every other person finding the right pieces to complete an outfit. Because of my size, I’m limited to a lot of what works and what doesn’t, so being able to find clothes to complete a certain look is always a great feeling.
2. Where are you from and what are biggest fashion trends in your city?
I’m from a really small town right outside of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Fashion really isn’t a movement in my city, so there isn’t really anything to pick up off of. I currently live in Huntsville, Alabama and the fashion here is a lot more detailed. Anything that you can cut up and pair together is a trend in the city.
3. Tell us about your biggest fashion nightmare and if it came true do explain. (attach a picture if you can)
My biggest fashion nightmare is ripping my jeans, and of course, it has definitely happened… more than once! Haha! One time, I was performing in a step show, adrenaline was pumping.. and all of a sudden I felt a nice breeze. It was extremely embarrassing because the crowd was behind and my underwear was orange. Smh.
4. What are some of your biggest style inspirations?
My biggest style inspirations are honestly random people on Instagram. I go to the explore page and get all of my inspiration from there… I’ll take an idea from about 3 different outfits and piece it together to create my own look. John Legend is my biggest inspiration when it comes to a celebrity because he keeps it very clean and simple. A simple black suit, white shirt, and black shoes can turn heads just as much a printed suit any day!
5. Where do you see yourself in five years and how do you see yourself accomplishing it?
In five years, I see myself doing redevelopment in low-income school systems and neighborhoods. I currently pursuing my Masters in Urban and Regional Planning from Alabama A&M University. My biggest dream is to help children understand the importance of education through design, so redeveloping school systems to meet their learning needs.
6. What do you feel is missing in fashion for the men of size?
The biggest thing missing is variety. We shouldn’t have to limit ourselves to a boot cut jean because society feels that our legs are too big to fit into a skinny jean. Fashion is art, and I believe you express yourself through fashion. It’s been difficult for men of size to be able to accomplish this because of the lack of support we’ve had in the fashion field.
